Radical Hospitality Event March 11, 2009
These are the five practices of vital, fruitful
congregations. These ideas are not secret or new, but they are the practices
that can lead to excellence and evolution in the life of our church. And they
are the practices that First United Methodist Church will be focusing on during
our worship time for five weeks, beginning January 17, 2010 and ending February
21, 2010.
Just imagine what can happen if everyone in our
congregation will spend five weeks—just thirty-five days— reading, praying,
discussing, and focusing on these five practices. God can change individuals,
entire families, and our whole church—thus changing the difference we can make
in and beyond our surrounding community.
You are invited to participate in this exciting emphasis
in a variety of ways: Sunday morning worship, at-home devotional readings,
planning groups, and a Church-Wide Service Day, March 27, 2010.
The daily devotional Cultivating Fruitfulness will be available for
you and your family at the Welcome Center for three weeks starting Sunday,
December 27, 2009. We challenge the entire church to be offering time each day to
this devotional.
Many groups in the church will be reading and studying the book Five
Practices of Fruitful Congregations (Bishop Schnase). Those books will
available through your small group leader very soon. There will be
additional groups added for this book study,
including a Saturday Men’s breakfast group.
God will change individuals, entire families, and First
Church—in advance, thank you for responding to the challenge of being a fruitful
congregation!

Join a
Five Practices Planning Group
First Church’s focus on the Five Practices of fruitful congregations is not a
sermon series, a book study, or a Bible study; it’s a special, committed time
for all of us to think, pray, and learn together about the purpose and ministry
of our congregation. It’s a time to make plans and dream about the best we can
be as a congregation.
If you are interested in focusing on one of these practices, join a planning
group! Small planning groups, in each of the five practice areas, will meet
three times focusing on scripture, our present practice and preferred practices
as we live our faith out together.
The planning groups will focus on Radical Hospitality - Passionate Worship -
Intentional Faith Development - Risk-Taking Mission and Service - Extravagant
Generosity, if you would like to join a planning group please contact the church
office, 533 9668.
